Mark Leary’s work floated in from a surprise angle and landed like a soft, cool flannel to the furrowed brow. It felt familiar, comfortable and endearing. In the language of surf, it appeared somewhat ‘kooky’ but was actually ‘totally core’ and truly insightful.

Alex Dick-Reid - Co-founder of The Surfers Path.

Perfection is an elusive visitor. We are convicted, to the wait, to perfecting the art of patience, to steeling ourselves for those rare days when we are summoned. The chance to see, to reach out, to embrace. We linger like inmates in our distinctive uniforms, sentenced to the salty fringes. But oh those blessed visitations. Those glassy days where the swells loiter, the wind holds and the banks conspire. These encounters live long in the memory. They sustain us through the lockdowns, through the riots, through those moments of solitary contemplation. Some approach this fickle sentence with a creeping frustration, they scratch at an itch they can never subdue. Others embrace the now, find joy in the every day, nourished by the minutiae that surrounds them, soothed by the calamine that goes unnoticed by the rest. The comforting scent of damp neoprene, the finger-worn pages, the curve of a translucent fin, the board resting in the corner or the wetsuit boots wedged behind taps, never quite dry. They can draw that smile, summon that memory and stir the soul for the next visiting day. They fire the stoke for driving rail to rail down the morning glass as much as bodysurfing the on-shore, for wading out and embracing the same white-water that sees others shake their heads and turn homeward to scratch some more. Here’s to the elusive visitor. Here’s to the joy, to celebrating the minutiae. Here’s to the salt, the sand and the aroma of wax.

Mark has captured the sentiment of the water world’s view of life. The pages bring us back to the happier reality.
